SSRI Antidepressants & Birth Defects
Studies have shown that the use of SSRI antidepressants during pregnancy affects Serotonin levels which is causing various fetal HEART, CARDIOVASCULAR & NEURAL TUBE DEFECTS, including:
- Atrial Septal Defects
- Coarctation of the Aorta
- Ebstein’s Anomaly
- Hypoplastic Left Heart
- Neural Tube Defects
- Pulmonary Atresia
- Pulmonary Valve Stenosis
- Tetralogy of Fallot
- Tricuspid Atresia
- Transposition of Great Arteries/Vessels
- Ventrical Septal Defect
They also may cause Omphalocele [fetus born with some of its gastrointestinal tract outside its abdomen due to a defect in the development of the abdominal wall muscles]; Anencephaly and Craniosyntosis. In addition, some limb reductions were found with Zoloft and Celexa use during pregnancy; club foot was seen with Paxil, Zoloft, Celexa. Some of the specific SSRIs that have been studied include: Prozac, Celexa, Lexapro, Zoloft, Paxil. These children have devastating injuries, expensive past and future medical bills and will need extensive future medical care to correct these defects.
