Transvaginal Mesh Device Overview and Lawsuit Information

What is Surgical Mesh?

Basically, surgical mesh is a medical device that is used to repair weakened or damaged tissue. It is made from porous absorbable or non-absorbable synthetic material [usually polypropylene] or absorbable biologic material and is most often used to treat Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP) and Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI). It is permanently implanted to reinforce the weakened vaginal wall to repair pelvic organ prolapse, supporting the vagina, bladder or rectum, or to support the urethra in the treatment of urinary incontinence.

Who Makes Surgical Mesh?

Surgical mesh is produced by a number of different manufacturers, including:

Manufacturer Product Name
American Medical Systems [AMS] Apogee,Perigee,BioArc,Elevate,SPARC,Mini Arc
Boston Scientific Pinnacle,Uphold,Arise,Advantage,Fit,Lynx,Obtryx,Prefyx,Repliform
C.R. Bard, Inc. Avaulta,Align,Pelvisoft ,BioMesh,Pelivicol, Acellular, Collagen,Matrix,Pelvitext,Pelvilace,Uretex

Why can the use of Vaginal Mesh Implants be dangerous?

Many women who have had surgical mesh implanted through the vagina have experienced serious complications. In some cases, the implanted mesh has started to shrink or erode through the lining of the vaginal wall, bladder or urethra. In fact, the FDA has released several health safety communications regarding the serious complications associated with the use of surgical mesh to treat POP and SUI. Side effects, symptoms and serious injuries linked to mesh failure include:

  • Vaginal pain and/or pelvic pain
  • Painful intercourse (dyspareunia)
  • Husband’s/partner’s penis getting cut by the hardened, eroded mesh during sex
  • Nerve pain in buttocks, hips, and/or legs from entrapped nerves
  • Worsening of the pelvic organ prolapse (POP)
  • Mesh erosion through vaginal wall
  • Vaginal scarring and shortening of the vaginal vault
  • Chronic vaginal infections, discharge and drainage
  • Migration of mesh to other organs
  • Perforation of bladder, urethra, vagina and/or bowel
  • Surgeries to revise or remove mesh

If you or someone you love is experiencing any of the above symptoms as the result of a vaginal mesh implant or sling failure, please contact your doctor immediately! These are scary and potentially very serious complications, and your health is of the upmost importance. In addition to protecting your body, you have a right to protect your rights. Your time to file a claim is running out, so call Liz Dudley, an Attorney and Former Nurse,  at The Dudley Law Firm as soon as possible!

What does the FDA say about Transvaginal Placement of Surgical Mesh?

Following an updated analysis of the adverse events reported to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the agency concluded that the use of surgical mesh for transvaginal repair of pelvic organ prolapse, or POP, was an area of serious concern. This analysis, combined with the complications outlined in recently published scientific literature, ultimately prompted the FDA to issue an updated safety communication to inform the public that serious complications associated with surgical mesh for transvaginal repair of POP are NOT RARE. The updated warning is a change from the agency’s original report in October of 2008.
